Syracuse basketball drops OT game to St. Bonaventure

Syracuse, N.Y. -- After squandering a 13-point second-half lead, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies regained their composure and pulled out a 60-57 overtime victory over Syracuse on Friday night at the Carrier Dome.

The Bonnies didn't make a single field goal in the overtime. All their scoring came at the foul line. They went 7-for-8 at the free throw line in the extra five minutes.
Syracuse out-scored St. Bonaventure 15-2 in the last 11 minutes of regulation to force overtime.
The Bonnies didn't score after Amadi Ikepeze's dunk with 7:17 left in the game gave them a 53-44 lead.
But after taking a 55-53 lead on Marek Dolezaj's driving basket to start the overtime, St. Bonaventure hit five out of six free throws to take a 58-55 lead. Syracuse scored again on Oshae Brissett's tip-in.
The Orange then got the ball back down 1 after St. Bonaventure's LaDarien Griffin missed a jumper from the free-throw line.
Brissett made a driving basket, but he charged into St. Bonaventure's Courtney Stockard with 11.9 seconds left and the basket was waved off.
Syracuse fouled Jaylen Adams with 6.9 seconds left.
Adams, who hadn't scored since putting up 21 first-half points, calmly swished both free throws for a 60-57 lead.

Syracuse rushed the ball upcourt. Frank Howard passed to freshman Howard Washington in the corner. Griffin blocked Washington's 3-pointer.
There was still 0.3 seconds left, but Howard couldn't catch Matt Moyer's inbounds pass and get his shot off in time.
Adams finished with a game-high 23 points for St. Bonaventure. Frank Howard led Syracuse with 17 points. Tyus Battle, who came in averaging 20.2 points, was held to 11 points on 3-for-18 shooting from the field. He made just one of his nine 3-point attempts.
Syracuse fell to 10-2 on the season, while St. Bonaventure improved to 10-2.
It marked St. Bonaventure's first win over Syracuse since the 1980-81 season and the Bonnies' first ever over the Orange in Syracuse. The Bonnies were previously 0-10 at the Carrier Dome.
After trailing 51-38 with 11:40 left in the game, Syracuse staged a furious comeback. Using the full-court press that fueled a come-from-behind win at Georgetown just last Saturday, the Orange rallied to within 53-50 with four minutes still remaining.
The Orange's pressure defense sped up the Bonnies and created a feeling of chaos. Even when the Bonnies broke through the defense, they attempted rushed shots rather than pulling the ball out and taking a little time off the clock.
But Tyus Battle missed a 3-pointer that would have tied game. Syracuse got the ball back, but Dolezaj missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 2:29 left. Syracuse got another defensive stop, but Battle missed on a drive against heavy traffic near the basket.
Syracuse got the ball one more time trailing 53-50. This time Brissett drove and dished to Paschal Chuwku, who banked the ball in and drew the foul. The bucket trimmed the Bonnies' lead to 53-52 with 1:18 remaining.
Chukwu hit the free throw, tying the game at 53 and capping a stunning 15-2 run for the Orange.
Adams missed a 3-pointer, but Syracuse couldn't get the long rebound. In fact, St. Bonaventure's Idris Taqqee had to save the ball from going out of bounds.
After a timeout, the Bonnies nearly ran down the shot clock until Matt Mobley missed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds on the shot clock and 28 seconds on the game clock. Dolezaj chased down the rebound along with a St. Bonaventure player. After a long review, the referees determined that the ball went off Bonaventure.
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim put the ball in Battle's hands. He dribbled time off the clock until 8 seconds remained and then he drove into the lane. He missed the runner, but Brissett got the rebound. He missed the second-chance shot and the teams headed to overtime.
